Gallery d’Arte, 548 West 28th Street, Suite 338, New York City is pleased to present Under Examination, a group exhibition of recent works by OD- formed by Jisoo Kim, Boram Park, and So Ry Yun. The show will run from June 8-14, 2016, with an opening reception on Thursday, June 9th from 6 to 8 pm.
For this group exhibition, OD seeks to make the viewers reflect upon their own identities, and therefore put themselves “under examination.” OD's rationale is inspired by the French Post-Impressionist artist Gauguin, and most particularly by the painting entitled Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? With this, each member of the artist group goes to present their own unique interpretations of the painting and its title. OD seeks to prompt the question of what is important in this generation by way of these three questions.
Jisoo Kim is a painter based in New York. For this group exhibition, she focuses on the question: What/Who Are You? She relays the emotions entwined in the acts of contemplation and isolation in her painting “Me, Myself and I.” As a result, she applies her hard-edged, kaleidoscopic patterns in repetition. The use of bold colors also brings her images to life.
Boram Park creates her sculptures in response to the question: Where Do You Come From? and believes that the answer is within the beholder. Through her pair of hand sculptures, she represents humankind’s very first sin by portraying the scene of Adam and Eve in the Garden. Her use of simple techniques clearly evokes this message.
So Ry Yun creates films entitled: Where Are You Going? She explores this overarching question by way of filming and presenting it in the third-person. Her films as well as the music evoke a dreamy atmosphere much like French independent films. All together her filmography attempts to deeply investigate the subject matter: Where are you going? or where am I going?
